Turks think Israel is their biggest threat, poll finds

Respondents put danger level from the US just behind Israel, but ahead of Syria; 85% see IS as a terror group
By Stuart Winer May 31, 2015, 11:46 pm 35

A survey conducted recently in Turkey found that nearly half that country’s citizens see Israel as the biggest security threat, followed by the United States, and only then Syria. The daily Today’s Zaman newspaper last week reported the results of the poll, which was conducted by Istanbul’s Kadir Has University among 1,000 respondents.

Asked which country they think poses the biggest threat to Turkey, 42.6 percent of participants chose Israel, while 35.5% said the US. Just 22.1% named Syria, which shares a border with Turkey and has been ravaged by four-year civil war, as the biggest threat to their country. Turkey has in the past fired at Syrian positions across the border after wayward shells from the civil war landed in its territory.

A similar poll in 2013 found 41% saw the United States as Turkey’s biggest threat, while 37.1% named Israel.

Asked about the Islamic State group, which has carved out large swaths of Iraq and Syria for its self-declared caliphate, 85% said they considered the jihadist organization as a terrorist group and 65.4% saw it as a threat to Turkey. Twenty-four point one percent said IS was not a threat to Turkey and 10.1% were undecided.

Israel and Turkey have been at loggerheads over a 2010 incident that saw the Turkish Mavi Marmara ferry boarded by Israeli commandos as it attempted to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. In the ensuing melee, after the Israeli soldiers were attacked with iron bars and wooden bats, troops opened fire and nine Turkish activists were killed; 10 Israeli soldiers were injured.

The incident triggered a crisis in relations between Israel and Turkey, which were already strained since Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in 2008-2009. Israel issued a formal apology to Turkey in March 2013 but disagreements persist over Ankara’s demand that Israel pay damages to families of the deceased and to the wounded.

Ties between the two countries have yet to recover, with Turkish officials often unleashing scathing rebukes of Israel. In January Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu accused his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, of killing Palestinian children and radicalizing the Muslim world. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is known for his angry outbursts at the Jewish state, declaring in July 2014 that Israel had “surpassed Hitler in barbarism.” Turkey under his rule has been a consistent supporter of Hamas, the terror group that rules Gaza.

Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

These Mongols are brain dead.
They just might not be being polled correctly to show a true reflection of their opinions; it is quite obvious to me that many Turks very likely believe that Erdogan and the AKP are the biggest threats to their wellbeing.

I'm sure this is their true reflection and true face.

Well Kurds Greeks Armenians and now Syria see turks as biggest threat.
Russian Girenak Joseph, who visited Kirkuk in Kurdistan as a part of his tour throu the 1870 - 1873 AD, who published the results of his trip & his studies later in 1879, in the 4th volume in the Bulletin of the Caucasus department of the Royal Geographical Russian Society estimated Kirkuk's population as many as 12-50,000 people, & he emphasized that except 40 Christian families, the rest of the population were Kurds. As for The Turkmen & Arabs, they have not been already existed at the time.

I would venture a guess by the outstanding performance of the Kurd HDP in last month`s election that Erdogan`s base support is crumbling. I have been watching Turkish people being attacked and silenced at protests against AKP`s criminal oppression of free speech, journalists, newspapers and military general officers. I have also witnessed Erdogan`s passionate love affair with the Muslim Brotherhood get destroyed by General al Sisi`s response to the Egyptian secular peoples` outrage to black flag rat bastard Mohamed Morsi`s attempts to enforce Sharia and make himself caliph(piss be upon the rat) and I do not believe that Turkey is any different in that very large numbers of Turkeys reject being forced into a box. Is it not well past the time to turn the tables and speak openly about the Turkish question?

Benjamin if you actually take a closer look to where the HDP got their additional votes from and from which parties you will realize that, maybe 0.1-0.2% of the whole 12% HDP votes came from the Turks.

Benjamin even the turks who voted for HDP are against any form of kurdish rule. Not even semi-autnonomy. They only vote for HDP because of faggot rights, peace and brotherhood. I know turks. Don't come here and tell us about the turks that we know alwell.

The other turks that vote for AKP, MHP and CHP are all antikurdish and CHP has comitted more massacres than all of the other ones combined. So much for turkish "leftism". MHP is an ultra-nazi turkish party that even want to forbid the few kurdish channels there are on turkish tv. You already know Erdogan and AKP, giving support to daesh.

You know turks truely hate kurds. Have you seen a turk protest for Kobani or rojava or Shengal? Turks cheered when Kobani and Amed massacre happened. They cheered when there was an earthquake in Wan. What have we done to deserve so much hate!?

Nazism, racism and discrimination is a part of turkish culture. It is in the mind of every turk. They are all kemalists. They build statues of a man that slaughtered more kurds than Saddam and this man was Hitler's and Mussolini's biggest inspiration and teacher. This man was also an alcoholic. That might explain why turks are so narrowminded, backwarded and have no manners. They lesrned from theor landfather. So much for turkish leftism haa? Worth to mention that the more civilised and kurdfreindly turks has comitted the biggest massacres of all of entire Kurdistans history.

This is like germans building statues of Hitler. It is in the mind of all turks. A leftist turk is only leftist when it comes to turks. When it comes to the leftist turk is more rightist than the rightists.

Also those turks that protested are the same ones that say "ISIS may none of your bullets be wasted".

I wrote a long text so you can understand that protesting against erdogan doesn't make you a friend of kurds. Rather the opposite. What little progress that has happened in Turkey and bakur is thanks to him. The others would still rape and kill kurds. I am not protecting him but he is ten times better than any of the other politicians and parties in Turkey. This should give you a clear picture of what kind of animals turks are. Never ever protect or trust a turk. It always ends bad.
