Tuesday, 05 March 2013 13:13

The Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced that a group of "terrorist" entered into the Iraqi territory targeting wounded Syrian soldiers and Iraqis who were with them near-Waleed border station between Iraq and Syria.

Argument between Zebari and his Egyptian counterpart

Thursday, 07 March 2013 09:04

Shafaq News / Informed sources revealed in the Arab League that an argument took place between Iraqi Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari and his Egyptian counterpart, Mohamed Kamel Amro on handing over Syria seat at the League to the Syrian opposition, as the first asserted that the League is for the states and not to opposition groups.

Sources said in a statement briefed by "Shafaq News" that "an argument occurred yesterday between Mohamed Kamel Amro, Minister of Foreign Affairs and his Iraqi counterpart, Hoshyar Zebari on this subject."

The sources pointed out that "the cause of the argument between the two ministers is the refusal of Iraq to the Arab view during a closed-door meeting of the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers to deliver Syria seat to the Syrian coalition."

The sources added that Zebari said to Amro Syria that Syria seat should not be delivered to the opposition, because if so we have to give the (Enqath) rescue Front a seat. "

Syria is witnessing a popular uprising calling for an end to the rule of President, Bashar al-Assad's regime, as the uprising has turned to an armed conflict with government forces that killed thousands, according to human rights organizations and humanitarian groups.

Iraq shares border with Syria that extends for about 600 km, which is bordering Anbar and Nineveh provinces from the Iraqi side.

Observers warn that the conditions in the region of the Syrian crisis began to evolve and take sectarian and doctrinal way that may include the region in general and Syria's neighbors in particular, as Iraq is of those countries that is witnessing religious, sectarian and nationalism pluralism.

Syrian rebels have kidnapped UN observers and taking them as hostages. The man in the clip basically says that "U.S. must tell Assad to obey us", and that "if no retirering occurs within 24 hours, we will do what we wants with with the hostages".

The irony in this, is that they are threatening the same hands who feed them. These Islamists can't fool anyone, we all know that without US support they would not stand a chance against Assad. xD

Demonstrations announce last chance Friday

Posted Image

Shafaq News / Anbar province and several Iraqi cities are witnessing demonstrations against the policies of Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki.

As demonstrations today in Anbar carried the slogan of "Friday of the last chance" in an attempt to put pressure on politicians to implement their demands that they have go out for 11 weeks ago.

The demonstrators in Anbar chanted slogans threatening to give up from all their demands and maintain one demand which is "overthrowing Maliki’s government."

Protesters told "Shafaq News" that today is the "last chance" to respond to their demands otherwise, the sit-in will remain with one demand.

The demonstrators demanded the release of detainees, cancel accountability and justice laws and anti terrorism law; the Iraqi authorities released hundreds of detainees in response to the protesters.

But the Iraqi government says that some of the demands of the demonstrators are of the authority of the parliament, referring to the accountability and justice (de-Baathification) and Anti- terrorism laws.

Demonstrations have witnessed strict security measures.

Iraq has witnessed over the last few weeks, demonstrations opposed to the policies of al-Maliki in a number of provinces, most notably Anbar, Salahuddin and Nineveh.

Similar demonstrations have been launched in Mosul, and carried the slogan "No for being loyal to Iran," as "Shafaq News", reporter has said, Kirkuk, Diyala and Salahuddin have also witnessed similar demonstrations.

Kuwaiti border “expansion” displaces many Iraq families

Posted Image

Tens of citizens in Oum Qasr region in Al Basra province expressed on Wednesday March 6 their concern and disapproval as they were requested to evacuate their homes considered to be within Iraqi territories before Kuwaiti borders were expanded.

“A few days ago, border guards asked citizens in Nuwab Al Dabit region located on the western end of Oum Qasr to evacuate the houses they have been living in since the 1980s and even 1970s. These houses will be demolished and annexed to Kuwaiti lands”, said Yaaqub Ismael, an Iraqi citizen, in a statement to Alsumaria. He added “Border guards advised us to find an alternative place to live in, without determining when we will be displaced. However they threatened to use force to drive us out of the region. People living in this area attempted on Tuesday March 5 to organize a peaceful demonstration to complain about displacing them without any indemnities in return, nevertheless the Iraqi government dispatched a Major General Officer who alongside his troops barged into the protest’s camp and threatened to burn it down and arrest protestors if they don’t end protests”. He mentioned that: “the region used to be very distant from the Kuwaiti borders but borders have been expanding ever since early 1990s due to generous concessions consecutive Iraqi cabinets made. At this point we live in houses located a few meters away from the border trench”.

“Some people living in this region will reject financial compensations if any were offered and they will refuse to leave the houses in which they were brought up”, said one of the region’s dignitaries Matchar Shnikh Al Khafaji in a statement to Alsumaria, considering that: “the Iraqi government should stop giving away parts of Iraqi lands”.

“Kuwait is a neighboring and friendly country; many citizens from Al Basra have Kuwaiti relatives and friends. However we will not compromise on the land of our fathers and grandfathers. Even if it is taken from us by force, future generations will get it back”, mentioned Al Khafaji. He added: “people here have agreed not to consort with any candidate who attempts to win our votes since we haven’t been visited by any governmental official since last elections”.

“Displacing those citizens in Nuwab Al Dabit is part of Iraq’s attempt to end Chapter Seventh’s sanctions by delimiting its border with Kuwait”, stated mayor of Oum Qasr region Salah Abdul Mahdi Habib in a statement to Alsumaria. He stressed that preliminary delimitation executed in the 1990s included placing concrete pillars on the borders. Recently the Iraqi government allowed its Kuwaiti counterpart to execute a project aiming to set up security metallic pipes linking the concrete pillars across the border.

“No less than 3 houses are located between pillar 104 and 105 and in the pipe’s path. Besides, since Iraq is forced to establish a 50-meter wide road for the security patrols on the border; the entire Nuwab Al Dabit region will be destructed and people will be displaced”, confirmed Habib. “The Iraqi cabinet promised a few years ago to build a housing complex for the damaged families and the region’s authorities dedicated a land for this purpose, however the government did not allocate any money to this project”.

“The citizens in the region live in constant fear ever since they received news that Kuwait wanted to resume work in the borderline pipe while the Iraqi government is oblivious to their suffering”, considered the area’s mayor.

In 1993, United Nations’ Security Council issued resolution 833 stipulating the delimitation of the Iraqi-Kuwaiti borders stretching over 216 km. The implementation of this resolution during the previous regime led to giving away lengthy Iraqi lands to Kuwait; including tens of Iraqi houses and farms in Sofwan area. By mid 1990s, Oum Qasr residential region was within the borders of Kuwait which demolished the region completely to allow for border security troops to execute their work without any hindrances. The demolition encompassed tens of houses, an elementary school, a mosque and a public market place.

Many Iraqi officials objected to resuming border delimitation procedures after the fall of the previous regime in 2003 in compliance with resolution 833, considering that this resolution was forced onto Iraq under international pressures and extraordinary circumstances. In 2005, the Iraqi government was greatly embarrassed when citizens from Safwan and Oum Qasr attacked foreign companies working on deploying borderline pipes. Protests and late night mortar shelling led to suspending the project before it was finished.
