Christmas bombings kill 34 in Iraq (Reuters) - At least 34 people were killed in three bombings in Christian areas of Baghdad on Wednesday, including a car bomb that exploded as worshippers were leaving a Christmas service, Iraqi police and medics said. Elsewhere in Iraq, at least 10 people were killed in three attacks that targeted police and Shi'ite pilgrims, police said. Iraq is enduring its deadliest violence in years, reviving memories of the sectarian bloodshed between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims that killed tens of thousands in 2006-07. The day's deadliest incident occurred in the Doura district of southern Baghdad when the car bomb went off as Christians were emerging from a Christmas mass, killing at least 24 people. Shortly before, two bombs in a crowded market in a separate, mostly Christian area of Doura killed another 10 people. Ahmed Edan, a policeman on duty in the area of the attacks, said the sound of the first of the two explosions caused worshippers to leave the church. "A car parked near the church exploded when the families were hugging each other goodbye before leaving. The blast was powerful," he said. "Bodies of women, girls and men were lying on the ground covered in blood. Others were screaming and crying while they were trying to save some of their wounded relatives." No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks in Baghdad, which also wounded 52 people. Iraq's fast-dwindling Christian minority has been a target of al Qaeda Sunni militants in the past, including a 2010 attack on a church that killed dozens of people. U.S. CONDEMNS "SENSELESS" ATTACKS The U.S. embassy in Baghdad condemned the bombings, saying in a statement that Christians in Iraq had suffered "deliberate and senseless targeting by terrorists for many years, as have many other innocent Iraqis". Al Qaeda-linked militants have stepped up attacks on Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's Shi'ite-led government and anyone seen as supporting it in recent months. More than 8,000 people have been killed this year, according to the United Nations. Car bombs, shootings and suicide attacks killed scores of Shi'ite pilgrims in the week before the Shi'ite holy day of Arbain, which coincided with Christmas Eve this year. On Wednesday, a bomb struck a minibus in southern Baghdad carrying pilgrims back from the Shi'ite holy city of Kerbala, killing three and wounding eight, police and medics said. To the west of Tikrit, 150 km (95 miles) north of Baghdad, gunmen killed three policemen on patrol, police sources said. A bomb exploded near a football pitch in the town of Ishaqi, 100 km north of the capital, killing four people, including two policemen, and wounding eight, police said. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/25/us-iraq-violence-idUSBRE9BO02R20131225 |

U.S. quietly rushing arms to Iraq The United States is quietly rushing dozens of Hellfire missiles and low-tech surveillance drones to Iraq to help government forces combat an explosion of violence by a Qaeda-backed insurgency that is gaining territory in both western Iraq and neighboring Syria, New York Times said in a report on Wednesday. The move follows an appeal for help in battling the extremist group by the Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, who met with US President Barack Obama in Washington last month. Al Qaeda’s regional affiliate, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, has become a potent force in northern and western Iraq. Bombings on Christmas in Christian areas of Baghdad, which killed more than two dozen people, bore the hallmarks of a Qaeda operation. “We have not received a formal request for U.S.-operated armed drones operating over Iraq, nor are we planning to divert armed I.S.R. over Iraq,” said Bernadette Meehan, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, referring to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. For now, the new lethal aid from the United States, which Iraq is buying, includes a shipment of 75 Hellfire missiles, delivered to Iraq last week. The weapons are strapped beneath the wings of small Cessna turboprop planes, and fired at militant camps with the C.I.A. secretly providing targeting assistance. In addition, 10 Scan Eagle reconnaissance drones are expected to be delivered to Iraq by March. They are smaller cousins of the larger, more capable Predators that used to fly over Iraq. The Obama administration has given three sensor-laden Aerostat balloons to the Iraqi government, provided three additional reconnaissance helicopters to the Iraqi military and is planning to send 48 Raven reconnaissance drones before the end of 2014. And the United States is planning to deliver next fall the first of the F-16 fighters Iraq has bought. Kurdpress |

Oh lol I thought you meant it is differently. Yes you can pray in different langauges and make Duas in Kurdish. Well if Saudis attack Shia Shrines then yes I'd have to defend them. But that is not to say I'm joining Iran or Hezbollah. I will fight for Kurds and Kurdistan any day. Religon and politics are two different things. Hezbollah and Iran use religon for their own gains, I'm not fooled heval by them. Edited by jjmuneer, Dec 26 13, 10:56.

Too many people have just died in my family not to be religious. I've realised the day of judgement is sooner than I expected. Plus death is a reality, people seem to think death is a joke or won't come to them, but it will. Some people here may be laughing at me or joking, but most people here have grand parents living and even a mother and aunties and uncles, I've had most of them wiped out to Saddam and to illnesses. By the way Athiests can go to heaven since we say God only shows one of his mercies on this earth and 99 in the hereafter. Plus we aren't like Christians, we believe most people will go to heaven. |

First image of al-Nusra leader is released 28.12.2013 Bestun Kakayi, BasNews, Iran Associated Press has published the first image of the al-Nusra Front leader, Mohammad al-Golani. The photo was given to the news agency by the Iraqi Intelligence Service. According to AP, Iraq’s intelligence also offered them a series of letters that showed Golani’s plan to kidnap UN workers and instructions to his aides in case of his death. The evidence was obtained after Iraqi officials captured a different branch of al-Qaeda in September. Syrian-born Golani keeps written documents on al-Nusra affairs, signing each one off. The letters also shed light on the ways in which the leader, believed to be 39, is directing the terrorist group. In his document, the leader makes use of the term rafida (defectors) in reference to Shia Muslims, claiming they should be killed. The letters also suggest that the leader may be worried about al-Nusra’s internal division and underlines certain weaknesses of the organization, he also appears not to trust a number of his commanders. The Al-Nusra Front operates primarily in Syria and has attracted a number of KRG Kurds, who have released death threats against the two Kurdish ruling parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) as well as Kurdish security (Asayish). http://www.basnews.com/en/News/Details/First-image-of-al-Nusra-leader-is-released-/9029 |

Great to see that the situation in Iraq is escalating! I hope this will be an eye opener for politicians in the USA. Most of them are a bunch of idiots! Iraq should be divided a long time ago. The same must and will happen with Syrian, Turkye and Persia! There will be peace in the Middle East after these countries are divided and balkanisation will take place in the Middle East! |
