December 14, 2012 BAGHDAD,— An Iraqi court handed the country's fugitive Sunni vice president a new death sentence after finding him guilty of possession, transportation and using silenced weapons. It is the fifth death sentence since trials against Tariq al-Hashemi began last spring, according to his defense team leader, Muayad Obeid al-Ezzi. "The new verdict was expected and it is an episode in the long series of death sentences that were and will be issued against my client," al-Ezzi told The Associated Press in a phone interview. The Shiite-led government has accused the vice president of playing a role in 150 attacks against security officials, security members and civilians from 2005 to 2011. The sentence was issued by the Central Criminal Court for possession, transportation and use of silenced weapons, Iraqiya said. Hashemi, a prominent critic of Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki,www.ekurd.net dismisses the charges against him and his staff, some of whom have also been sentenced to death, as politically motivated. The vice president did not attend the trial. He left Iraq last year and is now living in neighboring Turkey. Turkish officials have refused Iraq's request to hand him over to face trial. Hashemi, who received an arrest warrant on charges of "terrorism”, is currently living in Turkey since the 9th April, after he left Kurdistan Region, as he resorted to it after the Interior Ministry showed on 19 of December 2011 the confessions of a group of his bodyguards of carrying out acts of violence according to his orders. The Turkish government granted Hashemi in 31 of last July, a permanent residence in the country to confirm its refusal to hand him over to the Iraqi authorities. The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) (ICPO) issued in the 8th of last May, a red notice against al- Hashemi based on suspicions that he was involved in leading and funding of terrorist groups in Iraq, as it stated that this procedure will limits from his movement and freedom significantly and allows the countries where he stay in to arrest him, while it confirmed that it is not an international arrest warrant. It is noteworthy that the investigative body on al-Hashemi issue announced on 16 of last February that Hashimi and his bodyguards were involved in the implementation of 150 armed operations, like detonating car bombings, roadside bombs and rocket launchers as well as targeting Iraqi, Iranian pilgrims, senior officers and members of the parliament.
