Shimon Peres Says Obama Would Approve Military Strike on Iran

Israeli President Shimon Peres spoke to the New York Times about U.S. President Barack Obama’s attitudes towards a potentially nuclear Iran, expressing his belief that the Commander-in-Chief would approve a military strike on the Tehran if they posed an imminent threat to his nation.

“They [the United States] don’t begin by shooting. They try all the other means first—economic sanctions, political pressure, negotiations, everything possible,” the 89-year-old Peres said in today’s published interview. “But in the end, if none of this works, then President Obama will use military power against Iran. I am sure of it.”

He also addressed the openly testy relationship between the 44th President and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The problem is not between individuals, but between those individuals’ policies,” he continued. “It’s not whether they can have coffee together or not. Neither one is going to kick the other.”

“The problem is that Obama would like to reach peace in the Middle East and has to be convinced that Israel agrees with this,” Peres said. “Of course, he’s not convinced.”
