The White House called on Tuesday upon Europe to take action against Lebanese Hezbollah after Bulgaria blamed the militia group for an attack which targeted a bus carrying Israeli tourists at Burgas Airport in Bulgaria in July 2012, leading to the death of six. President Barack Obama's top counter-terrorism advisor John Brennan, his nominee to lead the CIA, called on European states to take "proactive action" to uncover Hezbollah's infrastructure, financing and operational networks; reported the Global Post. Brennan said the 18th of July 2012 attack on Burgas Airport east of Bulgaria resulting in killing 6 and injuring 30, exposed Hezbollah as "a terrorist group that is willing to recklessly attack innocent men, women, and children, and that poses a real and growing threat not only to Europe, but to the rest of the world." "Hezbollah's dangerous and destabilizing activities -- from attacking tourists in foreign countries to leader Hassan Nasrallah's active support of Bashar al-Assad's violent campaign against the Syrian people -- threaten the safety and security of nations and citizens around the world," Brennan added. Brennan praised Bulgaria for what he said was its professional and comprehensive investigation into the attack, and said Washington would stand with the government in Sofia as it fights terrorism. Bulgaria confirmed on Tuesday that two people affiliated with Lebanese Hezbollah were involved in the bombing in Burgas. Tsvetan Tsvetanov, the Bulgarian interior minister, said after the National Security Council of Bulgaria tackled the results of the investigation, that two of the three attackers had genuine passports from Australia and Canada. He said there was evidence that they belonged to Hezbollah’s military wing. “Information show that the suspects were financed by Hezbollah”, he added. Israel blamed the attack in Burgas in July 2012 on Iran and Hezbollah, however Iran has denied responsibility and accused Israel of plotting and carrying out the bus bombing while Hezbollah replied to Israeli accusation by blaming American agencies for the attack. As a first reaction to the investigation’s result, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed on Tuesday Bulgaria’s announcement that Hezbollah was involved in the attack. He accused “Hezbollah and Iran of waging a "global terror campaign", saying the Burgas bomb was among a series of such attacks”. “The attack in Burgas was an attack on European soil against a member of the European Union. We hope the Europeans will draw the necessary conclusions about the true character of Hezbollah," Netanyahu said in a statement. The Netherlands said in August 2012 that the EU should follow the lead of the United States who considered Hezbollah a terrorist group in early 1990s and, which would mean that EU could act to freeze Hezbollah assets in Europe. |
