Turkish police have used tear gas and water cannon against protesters occupying a park in central Istanbul.

Scores of people have suffered injuries, several of them when a wall collapsed during a police chase.

Demonstrators had held a four-day sit-in at Gezi Park, angry at plans to redevelop that part of Taksim Square.

But there is wider anger against PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Unrest has spread to the capital, Ankara, while protests were also reported in Bodrum and Konya.

Earlier this month, riot police clashed with tens of thousands people attempting to hold a May Day march in Istanbul.

'Summer of discontent'

The controversial redevelopment project is aimed at easing congestion around Taksim Square but also involves building a shopping centre over Gezi Park.

Opponents of Mr Erdogan's plans say the park is one of the few green areas left in central Istanbul.

One banner at Friday's protest included a cartoon of Mr Erdogan dressed as an Ottoman sultan with the slogan: "The people will not bow down to you."

People are angry and frustrated at the government's decision to build a shopping centre at the expense of one of Istanbul's most famous parks. But what started as a protest against the uprooting of trees is turning into a wider platform for expressing anger against government policies.

Environmentalists have been joined by gay and lesbian groups, as well as socialists, union workers, members of opposition parties from across the political landscape and even so-called "anti-capitalist Muslims". The excessive use of force by the riot police and the insistence of the government to pursue their plans for the park have escalated tensions.

Taksim Square has political significance for the anti-government protests. As part of the reconstruction plans, the square was banned as a venue for this year's May Day rally and any kind of demonstrations in the future; but now the government's heavy handed approach risks turning the square into a focal point for protests against its policies.
"We do not have a government, we have Tayyip Erdogan," political scientist and protester Koray Caliskan told the Reuters news agency.

"They are not listening to us," he added. "This is the beginning of a summer of discontent."

Hurriyet Daily News reported that seven of those wounded in the clashes with police had serious injuries, including a broken leg and head injuries.

A journalist was hit in the head with a tear-gas canister and Hurriyet's own photographer was injured, it added.

Amnesty International condemned the police's tactics against "peaceful protesters".

"The Turkish authorities must order police to halt any excessive use of force and urgently investigate all reports of abuse," said John Dalhuisen, director of Amnesty's Europe and Central Asia Programme.

"They have a duty to ensure that people can exercise their right to free expression and assembly."

Mr Erdogan has been in power since 2002 and some in Turkey have complained that his government is becoming increasingly authoritarian.

Last week, Turkey's parliament approved legislation restricting the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks.

The regulations would prohibit retail sales between 22:00 and 06:00, ban all alcohol advertising and promotion, and stop new shops and bars from opening within 100m (330ft) of schools and mosques.

Mr Erdogan said he wanted to stop young Turks from "wandering about in a state of inebriation" and was not trying to impose Islamic values.

The prime minister's Justice and Development (AK) Party has its roots in political Islam, but he says he is committed to Turkey's state secularism.

I hope this keeps on growing, but not enough to topple the government. These facists would be even worse to kurds than the islamists already in power. I hope this grows to a degree that it threatens the government. If that happens,PKK/BDP could ask for bonouses in the peace-deal. The government would have been greatly weakened, and would have to compromise.
But,tbh,i dont think this protest will grow to a position were it threatens the government. Maybe some protests in the future, but not this one.

Has Kerdogan made any public announcements on video yet, in his typically raised and strong voice?

And I really dislike seeing people with PKK flags together with Turkish leftists/socialists, as if they are not entirely on the opposite camp.

If kerdogan falls and MHP/CHP come to power we can kiss goodbye to any Kurdish rights
Russian Girenak Joseph, who visited Kirkuk in Kurdistan as a part of his tour throu the 1870 - 1873 AD, who published the results of his trip & his studies later in 1879, in the 4th volume in the Bulletin of the Caucasus department of the Royal Geographical Russian Society estimated Kirkuk's population as many as 12-50,000 people, & he emphasized that except 40 Christian families, the rest of the population were Kurds. As for The Turkmen & Arabs, they have not been already existed at the time.

I think you are right, but you forget one thing. Less rights in Turkey will attract more and more Kurds to the Kurdish struggle, the PKK will only gain more ground and strength.

Exactly! If the fightings go on, PKK will grow stronger. If CHP wins, PKK will grow stronger. If AKP wins, PKK will grow stronger. Haha, win win situation for us Kurds. Let them fight each other for some more months. Let there be a genuine hatred amongst Turks. In that way they will become splitted and we Kurds will stand stronger united.

And you forgot another thing. If Kemalists come to power, who will support our struggle? Do you think the West will give a f**k about it? Or Russia would have any problems with a pro Assad, Kemalist ruling party?

Remember the 90s when "mysteriously" Kurds disappeared, and no one gave a shizz about it?

Bro trust me the west will no longer support them, the role of the Media is now stronger than ever. People have access to the internet, now they cannot suppress the Kurds and make them "dissappear" as easily.

Trust me what is Kemalists going to do militarily that is different from the current regime? Nothing, because for 40 years no Turkish miitary has been able to annilhate the PKK.

Hevalno, no matter who is in power, the Kurds are not like the 90's. The government can not just randomly target and make Kurds disappear like in the 90's. Not even a MHP government. Even if MHP was in power today, they would have to come to consensus with Kurds.

These protests has more than ever shown that no matter which government is sitting in Ankara, without the Kurds, Turkey will never be stable.

I think some Kurds are blinded by their hatred towards Erdogan and his policy so they seem to have been desensitize about the Kemalists.

I am telling you there is absolutely nothing (beside the MHP) which could top the Kemalists in being disgusting fascists. They have proven it in the past.

Bro your missing the point, I know the Kemalists are more evil but that is my point. They should be in government to show their true side and nature.

There is not much difference between CHP and AKP. Had it been AKP during the 90's they would of done exactly the same thing to Kurds as CHP did.

But of course, given the times, and that we have a peace proces going on with AKP, we should definitely not side with CHP. But that does not mean that we should side with AKP easily either. Be critical of both. We are in a power position right now.

I think you missed my point. WHEN they are in the government it will be worse because the West and East will accept it silently.

What kind of benefit would we have from their real face if it will be harder to get rid of them? As if they haven't already shown their face in the past.

Didn't Nostradamus predict the return of the Medes or something like that? I read that somewhere.
This might just be the beginning.

We Kurds, descendants of the Medes, are getting stronger and 2 parts are liberated. Our enemies are killing each other (Arabs) and their countries are torn apart (i-rack and Syria).
Persians have a lot of enemies and they might fall soon aswel (if Israel attacks Iran).

And now, suddenly, this starts in Turkey. So all our enemies are having problems now. Hopefully this is be the beginning of a civil war in Turkey!

Yes he did, and he said the return of the Medes would change the World order. This is written in the Tora, Bible and Quran as far as I know
